PostSubject: Cheap On-Board Air   Tue Oct 04, 2011 1:25 pm

I am still thinking about the CO2 tank route, but have also been looking at other air sources. Aside from the big bucks ARBs or Viair systems, there are the smaller portable compressors. I saw this one at 4Wheel Parts and the guys there spoke highly of it, plus it is around $90. It connects to the battery not the lighter. Does anyone have an opinion about this air source? Also read a few threads at other forums. Here is an interesting set-up.

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f27/my-costco-q-maxx-mv50-compressor-build-700416/

I find a lot of cool stuff on the Jeep sites (don't throw stones) since my son has a Jeep and that is what got me into it.

I'm getting ready to order one but the MF-1050....same compressor. Found it on Amazon for $69 w/ free shipping.
Here's some more good info on it...

So MF-1050 is same as MV50? Our local 4Wheel Parts has the MV50 for $89.99. Only have one though. They also have a smaller Smittybilt one for $79...no good specs on it.

I heard that the Q-Industries one is a knock-off made in China and not as good quality as the original?

So I stopped by Harbour Freight tools today. They have a small compressor on sale for $59.99. Looks similar to MV50. (1.3 scfm @ 40 psi, 1 scfm @ 70 psi, .88 scfm @ 90 psi, 33 amp, 12 volt, 150 psi) Not really sure what all that means. Has alligator clips for battery with 10 foot cable and a 20 foot air hose.

They also sell CO2 tanks. They have a 10# one filled (I think) for $89.99. It does not have a regulator.

Scott, Im curious, what ever became of this? Did you settle on one? Im thinking about this as well. Just not sure if a tank or compressor is the way to go. I honestly would just want something to use on the trails and for everyday use so I dont have to find a damn gas station to air up.

I am probably going with the MV50. Will mount under hood and wire directly to battery. They have them at 4Wheel Parts for like $80 or $90 bucks. But they can also be found on-line for less. I like the CO2 tank, but the refill seems to be an issue.

Hope to have it before OBX trip.

I have the MV-50 air compressor from Q Industries. I got it from Amazon with free shipping for like $55.00 a couple years ago. It works good for me but i have 32's. I keep it in my 4Runner at all times. I just keep it in the carry bag that it came with. I've seen some peolpe mount theres in the engine bay area behind the air filter. It does get hot to the touch after use! I only wish that the hose had a guage on the end but i just use a tire guage and the built in one for better accuracy. I find it best to turn the compressor off then look at the built in guage for psi. Wink

I just picked up a Smittybilt compressor from 4Wheel Parts for $79.99 plus 3 year warranty for $8. I will put it in the back for now untill I use it and see how well it works before mounting it under the hood or in the back. After I get my side PSD rack from Dirtghost I may mount it there.

Will the 2 of you be at the OBX next week? Or URE this weekend? Maybe we could take a look at that point. I'm sure I won't have the new PSD, but I have a DIY version that we could experiment on...or on your rig...

Anyone still looking for a portable air compressor. I bought this one from Harbor Freight about a year ago to air up the tires on my motor home. These tires run at 90psi. The compressor has worked fine for me & I take with me when I am going off road in the FJ. It takes about 3 minutes to pump up the tires from 20psi to 32. With a 20% off coupon which can be found online or subscribe to thier email & they will send you one a month. The compressor is about $50 with tax. Could be a good Christmas gift.

Hey Scott, any updates on the on board air? After our conversation at breakfast in the hotel, I decided I would really like a 10 or 15 CO2 tank... the only problem is I cant find anything like that under a few hundred bucks. Let me know if youve found anything out.

Well, the Ebay seller that I purchased from has pulled the item. I guess they realized it was too good of a price since it was $60 cheaper than anywhere else. It was item # 290609905561 for reference though. I specifically wanted CO2 with an adjustable regulator so that I could use it off-road for tires and air tools and possibly a front locker down the road. I also wanted it for job sites so I can run nail guns, etc without the need to haul my big air compressor out. It's a great tool and was easy to justify the $300 since I can use it for work as well.
