PostSubject: What are you guys storing in your FJ's?   Thu Feb 09, 2012 4:10 pm

With my truck being an overland kind of build, I keep (permanently) a bit of equipment in / on my truck. Now, since I am living in a decently urban environment, some things I don't carry daily, due to the fact that they will just eat space and fuel efficiency. Here is a list, that is ever evolving, based on my experiences.

Always inside-
-Fully stocked first aid kit (to include trauma supplies and GP meds)
-Survival / Bail out / whatever you want to call it bag (spare clothes, NOAA weather radio, 2 military rations, and the three basics [fire, water, shelter])
-Season specific bag (winter load is wool blanket, polartec thermal base layer set, down jacket, 48oz of bottled water, 3 military rations [for calories], and more fire making equipment)
-Recovery box (standard stuff, tree saver, tow straps, shackles, 2 Entrenching tools, etc...)
-Fire extinguisher
-Full size ax
-Lightweight awning kit

When I know I'm going into the woods, or an extended trip, I additionally carry
-2x 5 Gallon water cans
-5 Gal fuel can (in the rack up top)
-a portable shower I made to attach to the water cans
-48in Hi-Lift
-My tool box
-Small cooler with ice, and a candy bar or two, plus anything I need cold.
-Camping chair

A lot of the stuff I carry pulls double duty. For instance, I have a very powerful flashlight in the dash cubby. Besides the headlamp in the bag, I don't feel it necessary to carry 6 flashlights. I spent some time in the infantry, walking around with heavy things on my back and such. And that taught me to travel light, and make use of the things I have, only having redundant systems for the really important things. Spare batteries, water, etc...

I feel like the point of the exercise is to get from A to B in one piece, with enough of a serviceable vehicle (and driver) left, to accomplish tasks as they may be required. Theres no sense (to me, your preference may vary) in driving the truck at 100%, hard as all get out, just to break it in the middle of nowhere. I tread cautiously, and avoid obstacles when I can, as opposed to potentially losing the vehicle. I really don't want to have to play Marine, and hump all that stuff out of the woods.

Something else I try to do is to use all of that stuff. If I buy something new, I make sure that I understand how it works, when to use it, and I try to practice with it every so often. My buddy has a farm, and whenever I go up there to visit and we want a campfire, I get out the firesteel and collect tinder, kindling, and fuel from the woods. I leave the gasoline, lighter fluid, and other such things to the side. Don't get me wrong, the bic lighter is an amazing invention, but as with anything else, all tools have their applications.

What are you guys hauling? Tips? Tricks? Suggestions?

Some spare change, hand sanitizer, flashlight, multipurpose tool, garage door opener, bitch-in-a-box. Other stuff as needed pending on destination (recovery bag, air compressor, shovel, rope, straps, section of 2x4, gun, etc.)

I pretty much always carry:

Flashlights and LED headlamp
pretty comprehensive toolkit
CO2 tank w/ adjustable reg.
Air tools, hose, etc.
Tire repair/plug kit
jumper cables
tarp
extra jackets, shirts, socks, gloves
water
basic first aid kit w/ some extras
toilet paper
trash bags and ziploc bags
rescue tape, duct tape, electrical tape
full wiring and electrical connector kit
extra fuses
waterproof matches
tow straps, d-rings, etc
heavy chain
tie down straps
full size shovel

I know there's more, but that's all I can think of right now...

If I'm actually going somewhere, I'll throw in more as needed. All of this actually fits comfortably under my rear shelf, leaving me a large flat carpeted area for day to day use.

I stopped worrying about a lot of that after I left Michigan. I carried a lot of winter survival gear up there due to the possibility of being stranded in the cold even when you are fairly close to civilization. Being in the Coast Guard and being called out on different cases makes realize how quickly and easily things can go way bad.

At first I thought you were carrying three boxes of ammo and then I
reread it. I do need more ammo boxes since the one I have is so useful.
